Exhibition 'Plantes, remeis i apotecaris. El jardí medieval del monestir de Pedralbes'

The exhibition offers an introduction to a complex and highly developed science that took shape throughout the medieval centuries, grounded in the basic principles of Greek and Roman medicine and enriched by contributions from Arab-Islamic culture, with nature as the starting point of its practice.

This body of knowledge was transmitted through a wide range of books and treatises that were continuously copied, translated into different languages, and commented on over centuries. In medieval Barcelona, physicians and apothecaries were well acquainted not only with the healing properties of various animal and plant products, but also with the appropriate medicinal compounds for each illness, which could be obtained from the city’s apothecaries.

The exhibition "Plantes, remeis i apotecaris" unfolds across three different spaces within the Reial Monestir de Santa Maria de Pedralbes: the former pharmacy, the cloister, and the former infirmary.
