Catalunya Freestyle is the first rap improvisation competition in Catalan. It consists of qualifying rounds held at various locations across Catalonia and culminates in a grand final. As part of La Mercè, audiences can attend one of the second season’s qualifying rounds of this celebration of Catalan-language rap. Freestyle is about rapping off the cuff, with lyrics based on the current situation, what the artist observes, and their feelings in the moment. Freestyle rap battles pit two or more people against each other in a verbal duel. The aim is to defeat their opponent using improvised rhymes, all set to a beat provided by the DJ. The more skill a participant shows in style, rhythm, rhyme, structure, and creative content, the higher the score they will receive from the judges.
