'Una mena d'Alaska’ (A Kind of Alaska)

Back

Theatre. The story of a woman who awakens from a 29-year long sleep.

Synopsis

On reading this play by Harold Pinter, the impulse and need to bring dance and theatre together gradually emerged as I immersed myself in the world depicted by the author. Pinter wrote a play that is both enigmatic and thrilling about the anticipated and fascinating awakening of a woman who wakes from a 29 year long coma caused by encephalitis lethargica, also known as "sleeping sickness" The play takes place in this highly recognisable state in which dreams and reality merge and in which life and death are virtuously interlinked to the point where it is unclear what is real and what was only a dream. A wonderful, poetic text, the political backdrop to which can be subtly glimpsed, like the bottom of a tranquil lake, that invites us to reflect on a sleepy society and the imminent awakening from this period of lethargy. How long will we sleep? -Ivan Benet
