'Lapònia’ [Lapland]

Synopsis

Mònica, Ramon and their five-year-old son, Martí, have gone to Finland to spend the Christmas holidays with Mònica's sister, Núria, her Finnish partner and their four-year-old daughter, Aina. Little Martí is really excited, in Finland he’ll be able to meet the real Father Christmas. The two families spend an idyllic evening in a little house surrounded by snowy fir trees, with a fire burning on the hearth, sledges by the door, a tranquil family setting... However, everything starts to go wrong when Aina tells Martí that Father Christmas doesn’t exist, that he is a character that was invented by grown-ups a long time ago to get children to behave nicely. It is completely impossible for one man to deliver gifts to all the children in the world in one single night. Martí is really upset with her, but even more so with his parents. For Mònica and Ramon it is really important to keep the magic of Christmas alive for their son.

From that moment, the two couples present two totally opposing ways of raising children, discussing truth and lies, traditions, family values, and inevitably secrets from the past come to light that neither couple wanted to dig up.
