'El gran teatro del mundo’ (The Great Theatre of the World)

Back

Classical theatre. One of the most important plays of the Golden Age, an unmissable classic by Calderón de la Barca.

Synopsis

Calderón de la Barca was well aware of the great power theatre had to create imaginaries, unknown up until that moment.

The genius creator Calderón tried, on numerous occasions, to combine his obedience to these dogmatic principles with elements that raise the spectator's awareness to spaces beyond blind obedience and enable them to reflect more broadly, embracing humanity without distinctions.

The Great Theatre of the World is a paradigmatic work in this sense. It combines a scenic imaginary never before seen in his time, and a versification of extraordinary beauty with profound spiritual and philosophical reflections that gave 17th century spectators and the modern-day spectator pause for thought on the nature of our existence and the values that accompany it.

For all these reasons, The Great Theatre of the World remains one of the most important theatre productions of the Golden Age.
