Filmoteca de Catalunya: The Gold Rush | Cinema a la plaça

Back

Plaça de Salvador Seguí

Duration: 87 minutes

We celebrate the Festes de la Mercè with a screening at Plaça de Salvador Seguí of the recently restored copy of Charles Chaplin’s classic The Gold Rush, which turns one hundred years old this year. The restoration was led by the L’Immagine Ritrovata laboratory of the Bologna Cinematheque, with the collaboration of the Filmoteca de Catalunya, MoMA in New York, the British Film Institute, and other major film archives around the world.

The copy being screened opened the Cannes Classics section at the latest Cannes Film Festival and includes recovered fragments from all these film archives. Specifically, the Filmoteca de Catalunya contributed a fragment of Chaplin’s film preserved as part of the Pere Tresserra Collection, donated by this Catalan collector and distributor.

Chaplin eating a boot and enjoying it as if it were a chicken leg, sucking the nails as if they were bones, is an image that, on its own, has traveled the world. Cold, hunger, and despair become, in the hands of the great comedian, ammunition to spark laughter.

The Gold Rush defines the great celebration of the 20th century that cinema has been and is, in fact, the film Chaplin wished to be remembered for; one of those movies that always appear on lists of the greatest films in cinema history.
