‘El mestre i el mar’ [The Master and the Sea]

Back

Theatre. A powerful story about communal graves, hidden souvenirs and the need to break the silence.

Synopsis

To mark the fiftieth anniversary of the death of the dictator Franco, we are reviving El mestre i el mar [The Master and the Sea], an essential play that reclaims the historical memory and real figure of Antoni Benaiges, a Catalan teacher who was murdered in Burgos in July 1936. Júlia, a young woman from Barcelona, discovers a box filled with forgotten souvenirs in her grandparents’ courtyard, as nearby a communal grave from the Civil War is being exhumed. Her grandfather's personal quest and fragile memory immerse them in a past filled with taboos, silences and unresolved history.
