‘François Truffaut’ season

Cinema. We’ll have the chance to enjoy films such as ‘Jules et Jim’, ‘La Peau douce (The Soft Skin) and ‘La mariée était en noir’ (The Bride Wore Black), among others.

François Truffaut's (1932-1984) outlook and way of understanding life were shaped by his love of cinema.

In 1959, he made his directorial debut with Les Quatre Cents Coups (The 400 Blows), a coming-of-age drama based on his own struggles as a child, with which he became a key figure in the French New Wave (Nouvelle Vague), the current that marked the start of modern-day cinema and which made him one of the most famous directors thanks to a body of work imbued with humanism and romanticism and geared towards audience tastes.

Women, books, childhood and death are some of the key themes in a filmography characterised by absolute sincerity where the autobiographical element is ever present, particularly through the character of Antoine Doinel, his on-screen alter ego.
