‘Dario Argento’ season

Back

Cinema. This Christmas, the programme at the Filmoteca is tinged blood red with a season dedicated to the Italian Master of Horror, Dario Argento.

In 1970, the release of L’uccello dalle piume di cristallo, marked a turning point in giallo —the Italian thriller or horror genre established by Mario Bava in the early 1960s - and the emergence of its leading proponent, the ‘Master of Horror’, Dario Argento (Rome, 1940).

The film director added a cruelty to the genre that was even more perverse, and a highly personalised operatic style packed with visual effects and ominous music, generating a whole school of imitators in his homeland and having a huge influence internationally over directors such as John Carpenter, Wes Craven, Brian De Palma, Gaspar Noé and Nicolas Winding Refn.

The psyche is the origin of his films, macabre tales of a dreamlike nature in which the sensory and aesthetic experience prevails over the coherence of the narrative. A stylist of evil who, like Edgar Allan Poe, of whom he was a huge fan, knows how to draw beauty out of tales of sadism, violence and death.
