Josep Samitier and Jorge Volpi: ‘The medicine of the future’

Back

Biomedicine. Bioengineering expert Josep Samitier and writer Jorge Volpi will be talking about the impacts and the future of biomedicine.

Nanorobots, lab-grown organoids, pig-to-human organ transplants, and personalised or precision medicine are terms that have left the realms of science fiction and have entered the realm of scientific research and, in some cases, medical practice.

At the moment, all these techniques can be used to treat diseases. But there could come a time when they can be used to slow down ageing or replace organs as they become damaged with age.

Is it possible that we could improve, rather than go downhill as time passes? How would this change society and what it means to be human?

Josep Samitier, director of the Institute for Bioengineering of Catalonia and expert in nanomedicine, will be talking to the writer Jorge Volpi, author of the essay La invención de todas las cosas / The Invention of All Things, about how biomedicine will transform the body and intellect of humanity.

The debate will be moderated by science journalist Cristina Sáez.
