Cycle: ‘Genet al Raval’

Back

Cinema. We can see ‘Un chant d’amour’. The only film the writer directed, plus adaptations of his work.

The French poet, novelist and playwright Jean Genet (1910-1986) lead a transgressive, marginal and often extreme life. He spent time in Barcelona in the 30s and frequented venues such as La Criolla, the Madame Petit brothel and in particular the basement premises at the port, where his experiences would later be reflected in his autobiographical novel Diari del lladre. The novel lead to the script for the only film he directed, Un chant d’amour, produced in 1950 and first shown in 1975. The atmosphere of the city’s “Chinatown” (now El Raval) and the experiences he had there left an indelible mark on the writer’s aesthetic sensitivity and subject matter.

This retrospective regains the finest adaptations of his work as well as films directly influenced by his universe, a documentary that points to him as a sexual abuser, plus two short films that reflect on his vision of the Palestinian drama and a reading session at the Biblioteca del Cinema.
