"Albéricas" Concert

Albéricas a l’havanera

Habaneras – Catalonia

This evening of habaneras and new sounds will be performed by three generations of women from the Garrotxa region of Catalonia, relatives of singer-songwriter Marià Albero. Though Albero passed away in 2013, he lives on through his children, grandchildren and a company of musicians. Part of his family has started a band that performs a Catalan musical repertoire influenced by Cuban sounds, as they’ve spent long periods on the island. Here, the habaneras are infused with syncopated Cuban rhythms such as danzón and marcha . Traditionally sung a cappella or with only a few instruments, they are enriched by the sum of all these influences in this group’s performances. Habaneras already feature a certain coming-and-going rhythm, and these women take it on yet another journey to the Caribbean. Albéricas play percussion instruments such as traditional drums, panderos and tambourines, but they also make music with frying pans, scallop shells, mortars, tins and more. The rhythm is paired with the harmony of their voices, the strings of the guitar and timple, and the power of the gralla, a traditional double-reeded instrument. A true journey to the roots.
