19th Philosophy Cycle: ‘Body, soul and morals’

Philosophy. How can we make a space to rethink ethics and the body in these times of scientific reductionism, artificial intelligence and values uploaded to the cloud?

Taking place from 9 January to 6 March is the 19th Philosophy Cycle: ‘Cos, ànima i moral’ (Body, soul and morals), from Biblioteques de Barcelona.

  • Thursday 9 January at 6.30 pm, at the Gabriel García Márquez Library: Conversation between Ricard Solé and Francis García
  • Monday 13 January, at 6.30 pm, at the Francesca Bonnemaison Library: Ser o no ser. El suïcidi des d'un punt de vista filosòfic. (To be or not to be. Suicide from a philosophical viewpoint) With Oriol Ponsatí-Murlà, doctor of Philosophy at the Universitat de Girona and assistant professor of history of ancient and medieval philosophy and history of science and culture.
  • Thursday 16 January, at 6.30 pm, at the Montbau – Albert Pérez Baró Library: En qui (o en què) ens estem convertint? (Who (or what) are we becoming?) Reflection based around Rosi Braidotti and Donna Haraway. With Belén González-Barros, lecturer at the UNED and secondary education teacher.
  • Monday 20 January, at 6.30 pm, at the Ignasi Iglésias – Can Fabra Library: Què fa un heroi? Del cos a l’ànima i del símbol a l’acte. (What does a hero do? From body to soul, and from symbol to act) With Emma Grau, graduate in philosophy and classical philology from the UB.
  • Wednesday 22 January, at 6.30 pm, at the Joan Miró Library: Risc existencial, superintel·ligència i ètica: repensar Nick Bostrom. (Existential risk, super intelligence and ethics: rethinking Nick Bostrom). With Joan Morro, lecturer in philosophy at the UNED, PhD in humanities.

With Joan-Ramon Laporte, doctor and emeritus professor of pharmacology, author of Crònica d’una societat intoxicada (Chronicle of an intoxicated society).
  • Tuesday 28 January, at 6.30 pm, at the Poblenou – Manuel Arranz Library: Cultivar la humanitat: ètica i política en Martha Nussbaum (Cultivating humanity: ethics and politics in Martha Nussbaum). With Carla Carreras, PhD in philosophy from the Universitat de Girona and teacher.

  • Thursday 6 February, at 6.30 pm, at the Montserrat Abelló Library: Crisi ecològica: ens pot ajudar l'estètica a reconnectar amb la natura? (Ecological crisis: can aesthetics help us to reconnect with nature?) With Marta Tafalla, PhD in Philosophy, lecturer at the UB.
  • Thursday 6 February, at 6.30 pm, at the Jaume Fuster Library: Phobiopolítica: ètica, democràcia i control mediàtic en l’opinió pública.(The politics of fear: ethics, democracy and media control in public opinion). With Francis García Collado, author of the book. Professor of Ethics and Psychology at the UdG, ESRP-UB, UVic-UCC and the UIC.
  • Thursday 13 February, at 6.30 pm, at the Vapor Vell Library: Jean-Marie Guyau: és possible pensar una ètica sense obligació ni sanció? (Is it possible to design an ethics without obligation or sanction?). With Jordi Riba, professor of philosophy at the UAB and researcher at the Université Paris 8.
  • Tuesday 18 February, at 6.30 pm, at the Sant Gervasi – Joan Maragall Library: L'Abraham de Søren Kierkegaard o com defensar allò que és absurd (Søren Kierkegaard’s Abraham or how to defend the absurd). With Begonya Saez Tajafuerce, PhD in philosophy with the thesis Søren Kierkegaard: La seducció ètica (1997) (Søren Kierkegaard: Ethical seduction (1997)).
  • Thursday 20 February, at 6.30 pm, at the Jaume Fuster Library: El cos com a presó de l'ànima urbana (The body as a prison of the urban soul). With Marino Pérez Álvarez, psychologist, academic and essayist.
  • Thursday 27 February, at 6.30 pm, at the Nou Barris – Aurora Díaz Plaja Library: De Zhuangzi a Nishida: sobre la unitat cos-ment i l’acció sense agent. (From Zhuangzi to Nishida: on mind-body unity and action without agency). With Raquel Bouso, PhD in humanities and professor of Asian religions and thought at the UPF.
  • Thursday 6 March, at 6.30 pm, at the Biblioteca Guinardó – Mercè Rodoreda Library: El jo més enllà de la pell: la individualitat des de la filosofia de la biologia (The ‘I’ beyond the skin: individuality from the perspective of philosophy of biology) With Alba Padrós, who is studying for a PhD in Philosophy of Science at the University of Oviedo.
