Sala Aixelá (1959-1975)

Back

Exhibitions. The establishment was a platform for promoting photography, comics, classic and independent films and the latest trends in music.

Aixelá was a specialist audio-visual equipment shop that opened its doors at number 13 on Rambla de Catalunya in Barcelona in 1958. The shop became a pioneering establishment that played a part in the reconstruction of a modernity that the Franco dictatorship interrupted.

From 1958 to 1975, Aixelá developed into a meeting place and a platform for promoting photography, comics, classic and independent films and the latest trends in music.

The exhibition itinerary is based on a selection of 29 photography, comic and painting displays presented in Sala Aixelá between 1959 and 1975, together with a section given over to film and a compilation of music which can be downloaded online.

By way of context, and to show what the physical shop space was like, the exhibition has reinterpreted the designs created by the Zen studio (author of the corporate image, displays and Aixelá posters), as well as the devices – radio and television sets, hi-fi equipment, projectors and cameras – on sale during the same period.

Free guided visits are being offered on Tuesdays at 6 pm and on Saturdays and Sundays at 12 noon.
