Sant Jaume joins the celebrations for 800 years of Nativity scene.

This year, Plaça de Sant Jaume will be hosting an installation by set designer Ignasi Cristià, which pays tribute to the Neapolitan Nativity scene tradition, based on a nativity that is 100% made in Barcelona and which forms part of the celebration of 800 years of nativity-scene.

On the night of Christmas 1223 in the Italian city of Greccio, Francis of Assisi created the first ever nativity scene in history, in an almost empty cave, a bare nativity. Centuries later, Naples took up the idea and brought the religious event into a social setting, showing the diversity and everyday life of the city.

Ignasi Cristià takes up the tradition of the Neapolitan nativity scene and brings it to Barcelona. The city and its everyday life become the backdrop to one of the most important moments in the story of the nativity, with the dynamic of a 21st-century Mediterranean metropolis.

The piece will also serve to tell the story of the age-old tradition with a graphic display that will transport those who come to admire it back through time.
