Teju Cole ‘Recovering meanings’

Humanities. The writer offers a personal reflection on the human condition, while calling for awareness and a return to meaning in the name of complex-free resistance.

In dialogue with the journalist and cultural researcher Berta Ares, the writer, photographer and historian Teju Cole reflects on dehumanisation in today’s world and explores paths of meaning and belonging through art and literature, on the occasion of the publication of Black Paper. Writing in Dark Times (Acantilado, 2025).

Invoking such diverse figures as Edward Said, Caravaggio, Black Panther, Lorna Simpson and Susan Sontag, Teju Cole draws on art, documentary photography and literature as a way of criticising, denouncing, and examining questions like the vulnerability of the migratory experience, negritude and its many manifestations, and the colonial imaginaries that forged western discourse, and the wounds they are still inflicting. Confronting the cruelty of the world, Teju Cole explores the language of art as an essential instrument for navigating the present and resisting dehumanisation.

En diàleg amb la periodista i investigadora cultural Berta Ares, l'escriptor, fotògraf i historiador de l'art Teju Cole reflexiona sobre la deshumanització del món actual i explora possibles camins de significat i pertinença a través de l'art i la literatura, arran de la publicació de Papel negro. Escribir en tiempos oscuros (Acantilado, 2025).

Invocant figures tan diverses com Edward Said, Caravaggio, Black Panther, Lorna Simpson o Susan Sontag, Teju Cole es val de l'art, la fotografia documental i la literatura com a eina de crítica i denúncia per explorar qüestions com la vulnerabilitat de l'experiència migratòria, la negritud i les seves múltiples manifestacions o els imaginaris colonials que han forjat el discurs d'Occident i les ferides que provoquen encara avui. Davant de la crueltat del món, Cole indaga el llenguatge de l'art com un instrument imprescindible per navegar el present i resistir a la deshumanització.

En aquesta sessió, conduïda per Berta Ares, Cole ens ofereix una reflexió personal, profunda i poètica sobre la nostra condició humana, fent una crida a la consciència i al retorn als sentits en nom d'una resistència sense complexos.
