Cinema. To mark the centenary of his birth, the Filmoteca is offering a representative selection of the works of this director, an essential author of modern cinema, beyond the controversy, ill temper and testosterone that have surrounded his films.

Sam Peckinpah (1925-1984) began his career writing for and directing TV westerns and later, as a film director, revitalised the western at a time when the genre was on its way out.

In a time of change and crisis, Peckinpah served as a bridge between the ideals of classic cinema and the concerns that would end up shaping the new Hollywood.

Already in his early films, and particularly in The Wild Bunch, he managed to redefine the genre bringing it to a twilight zone in which nostalgia for a lost past, the decline of heroes and the inexorable changes of civilization gain prominence together with a disenchanted view of the human condition and a singular mix of lyricism and violence. From a formal point of view, he invented a new way of representing the action, combining bloody, slow-motion deaths with a rapid editing style, gaining him a reputation as the “poet of violence”.

He also tackled the thriller and war-film genres, but always with a nod to the western. To mark one hundred years since his birth, the Filmoteca remembers this controversial and ill-tempered director who holds a place of honour in modern cinema.

Enamorat de l’estil de vida del Far West, Sam Peckinpah (1925-1984) es fogueja com a realitzador televisiu en sèries de l’oest nord-americà i, ja com a cineasta, revitalitza el western en un moment en què aquest estava tocat de mort. En un temps de canvi i de crisi, Peckinpah actua com a pont entre els ideals del cinema clàssic i les inquietuds que acabarien configurant el nou Hollywood.


Ja en els seus primers films, però sobretot amb The Wild Bunch, aconsegueix redefinir el gènere portant-lo a un terreny crepuscular en què la nostàlgia per un passat perdut, l’ocàs dels herois i els canvis inexorables de la civilització cobren un gran protagonisme juntament amb una mirada desencantada sobre la condició humana i una barreja singular de lirisme i violència. Des del punt de vista formal, inventa una nova manera de representar l’acció tot combinant morts sanguinolentes a càmera lenta amb un muntatge vertiginós, que li va valer el renom de “poeta de la violència”.

També va tractar el thriller i el cinema bèl·lic, però sempre en clau de western. A cent anys del seu naixement recordem aquest cineasta, tan polèmic com atrabiliari, que ocupa un lloc d’honor en el cinema modern.
