“Paul Newman, director” cycle

Cinema. You can see films like ‘Rachel, Rachel’, ‘Sometimes a Great Notion’ and ‘Harry and son’, as well as others.

Paul Newman studied stage direction at Yale University and directed a number of amateur short films.

When he made his feature film directing début, he did so with his wife, Oscar-winning actress Joanne Woodward, in mind, who had hardly received any projects after stepping back from the spotlight for a few years to raise their three daughters.

In Rachel, Rachel, Newman offered Woodward an intensely emotional and introspective role in which the actress reflected on the concerns of many women at the time who had postponed their personal ambitions to take on family roles.

The film’s success confirmed to Newman that it was possible to direct intimate and personal films while maintaining artistic integrity. His following five feature films maintained a very close relationship with his private life, consolidating a sober style focussed on contained emotions, continuing to place women in the leading role.

In Paul Newman's centenary year, the Filmoteca de Catalunya celebrates the legend by rediscovering his vision as a filmmaker.
