Mathematics and Art

Art and science. A series of talks that explores how mathematics structures our perception of reality and drives artistic expression.

To mark the International Day of Mathematics, from 13 to 31 March, Biblioteques de Barcelona will be offering a series of talks entitled Mathematics and Art.

Mathematics and art have been intrinsically linked throughout history, each drawing inspiration from the other and giving rise to some surprising creations. This programme takes a closer look at this relationship.

Beyond symmetry and proportions, mathematics is the basis of music and also animation, and it inspires and boosts creativity in the digital age.

Admission to the talks is free.

Thursday, 13 March, at 6.30 pm, at the Jaume Fuster Library: Mathematics or the art of modelling ideas. With Alessandro Maccarrone, mathematician and author of El infinito placer de las matemáticas / The Infinite Pleasure of Mathematics.
Monday, 17 March, at 6.30 pm, at the Camp de l'Arpa - Caterina Albert Library: Music and mathematics: an ongoing dialogue. With Pilar Bayer, mathematician.
Thursday, 20 March, at 6.30 pm at the Gabriel García Márquez public library: Mathematics in animated movies (Pixar). With Toni Susín, mathematician.
Monday, 24 March, at 6.30 pm, at the Sarrià - J. V. Foix Library: Digital art and mathematics. With Lali Barriere, mathematician and artist.
Monday, 31 March, at 6.30 pm, at the Sagrada Família-Josep M. Ainaud de Lasarte Library: Our mathematics with art and creativity: a global projection. With Josep Tarrés, engineer and artist.

Més enllà de la simetria i les proporcions, les matemàtiques són a la base de la música i també del cinema d’animació, i inspiren i potencien la creativitat en l’era digital.
