George Cukor (1899-1983) made a name for himself in Hollywood at the start of the sound era and used his background in theatre to develop a concept of cinema based on the importance of dialogue and acting direction.

 In the more than fifty films that he directed, spanning all kinds of genres, he was able to impose his sense of spectacle. Striking the perfect balance between sophistication, elegance and sense of humour, and with his capacity to convey the subtlety of certain situations, he excelled in melodrama and high comedy.

He defined the careers of great Hollywood actresses - a list headed by Katharine Hepburn– offering them characters that broke away from the prevailing stereotypes, and were nuanced, contradictory and human.

Provinent del teatre, George Cukor (1899-1983) es va establir a Hollywood a inicis del sonor i va aprofitar el seu bagatge escènic per desenvolupar una concepció del cinema basada en la importància dels diàlegs i la direcció actoral.

Sempre al servei dels grans estudis, afirmava que no era un "autor" i que es limitava a traduir en imatges guions carregats d'enginy i intel·ligència que majoritàriament procedien d'obres literàries i teatrals. Tanmateix, en els més de cinquanta films que va dirigir repartits en tota mena de gèneres, va saber imposar el seu sentit de l'espectacle.

Amb l'equilibri perfecte que establia entre sofisticació, elegància i sentit de l'humor i la seva capacitat per transmetre la subtilesa de certes situacions, va excel·lir en el melodrama i l'alta comèdia. La Metro el va batejar com "el director d'actrius" i, certament, va definir la carrera de grans actrius de Hollywood –amb Katharine Hepburn al capdavant– proposant-los-hi interpretacions de protagonistes que defugien els estereotips imperants, tot cercant personatges complexos plens de matisos, contradiccions i humanitat.
