The Centre d’Interpretació del Castell de Montjuïc houses a permanent exhibition that traces the history of this architectural monument, one of the most significant in Barcelona and throughout Catalonia. Featuring objects, original works, and documentary materials from various archives, the exhibition occupies four rooms within the castle, which have been remodelled and adapted for the museographic project and are accessible from the parade ground.
The exhibition is organised into four sections: Muntanya de Barcelona; Farell, fortí i fortalesa; Defensa i repressió; and Presó i memòria.
The first section, Muntanya de Barcelona, explores how Montjuïc hill has been inhabited, exploited, and transformed for around 10,000 years. Its quarries supplied the sandstone used to build Barcelona from Roman times onwards. Today, Montjuïc is the city’s major cultural park.
The second section, Farell, fortí i fortalesa, focuses on the fort that the city authorities ordered to be built around the farell—also known as a watchtower—which had occupied the summit of Montjuïc since medieval times, at the outset of the Reapers’ War (1640–1652). Over the years, the fort gradually increased in size.
In the third section, Defensa i repressió, the exhibition reflects on the role of the castle as a strategic site for the defence and surveillance of Barcelona during the modern wars of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Following the Catalan defeat of 1714, the fortress was used to control the population and, from the nineteenth century onwards, served as a military prison.
The fourth and final section, Presó i memòria, focuses on the imprisonments, torture, trials, and executions carried out there between the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The castle was also the site where, in 1940, the Francoist dictatorship executed Lluís Companys.
