In medieval times, during the festival of Corpus Christi, many municipalities saw themselves filled with devils, gunpowder and fire among the throngs of the procession. This book by Carles Freixes reveals the secrets of these displays and their transformation over the centuries.
From early references, we learn about the festival devils found in other traditions, for example, in Italy and Latin America, who then transcended borders . The prohibitions and reforms of the Enlightenment attempted to silence them, and many disappeared, apart from ones such as those of the Patum de Berga.
