Ceremonies. A wreath will be laid beforehand at the Joan Miró mosaic in Pla de l’Os, on La Rambla, with the relatives of those killed.

Barcelona City Council, in collaboration with the Government of Catalonia and the Spanish Government Delegation in Catalonia, is coordinating a ceremony in remembrance for and solidarity with the victims of the terrorist attack on 17 August last year. The ceremony will be held in Plaça de Catalunya, with a wreath to be laid in La Rambla. Official representatives from the town councils of Cambrils and Ripoll will also be attending, as well as others from Alcanar and Subirats. Similarly, representatives from Rubí, Sant Hipòlit de Voltregà, Vilafranca del Penedès and Zaragoza will be present, the home municipalities of those killed, along with officials from all police corps, emergency services and other public services which provided support. The focus of the ceremony will be on the families of those killed and injured in the attacks.

The commemorative ceremony for the first anniversary of the attacks is being held in Plaça de Catalunya at 10.30 am on Friday 17 August. ‘Barcelona, City of Peace. A ceremony in remembrance for and solidarity with the victims of the terrorist attacks of 17 August’ has been coordinated by the Commissioner for Memory Programmes.

The ceremony will be a solemn, simple and emotive occasion, the focus being on the music, those injured and the families of the victims, with no official speeches to be made. The tribute entails a musical performance by the city’s five municipal music schools and the municipal music conservatory. The journalist Gemma Nierga will present the ceremony.

Over fifty volunteer students from the city’s municipal music schools will be taking part in the musical performance. The ceremony opens with El cant dels ocells, performed by five cellists, a double bass and a baby grand piano, followed by a text read out in the seven languages of those who died (Catalan, Spanish, English, French, Portuguese, Italian and German). The texts will be read by people who took part in the inter-faith meeting in the city last August.
