'Expulsió'

Theatre. A story about the need to believe in little utopias in today’s Barcelona.

Synopsis

A married couple find an injured bird next to a field of wheat. They decide to look after it and feed it as if it were their child. In that same spot, next to the field, they built a house which over the years would become the family’s summer home. After adopting the bird, another son and a daughter arrived. The wife passed away after a long illness. A few months later her husband went to some woods and disappeared. This story starts roughly a year after the death of the couple, with a family reunion.

The three siblings (two sisters and a brother) get together at the family home where they’ve spent the summers since their childhood. Among other things, they need to decide what to do with the house, will they continue to use it as a summer home? Should they sell it? Should they rent it out?

The brother is here with his teenage daughter, who has been sent off from a football match for a very violent tackle. The girl will end up pointing out the contradictions of the adults, who on one hand criticise the sensation of social suffocation in the city, and on the other appear to contribute to its perpetuation.

With his natural, intimate and poetic writing, playing with the most specific details and what is unsaid as there are now words for it, Pau Miró’s Expulsió makes us think of a contemporary Catalan version of Chekhov.
