Exposicions. The Fundació Mapfre and the Museu Rodin de París present the exhibition ‘Hell According to Rodin’ at the Casa Garriga Nogués.

The Gates of Hell is the most important and ambitious work by the French sculptor Auguste Rodin. Regarded as the father of modern sculpture, Rodin never considered he had finished the piece, which was commissioned for the entrance to a museum of decorative arts which was never built.

Rodin’s inspiration for the piece came from Dante’s Inferno but over the years he began to imbue it with the sensual and tormented spirit of the poems by Charles Baudelaire, The Flowers of Evil.

Some of the sketches and characters he worked on for the entrance gave rise to some of his best-known works, such as The Thinker, The Prodigal Son and The Kiss.

The exhibition, organised to commemorate the centenary of the death of Rodin, brings together a hundred sculptures, thirty relatively unknown drawings and various mock-ups offering a broad vision of the artist’s creative process and the evolution of his work.
